About Mansoura
Think of eunuchs, pharaohs, sultans, kings, crusaders and ancient battles. This is the land of Egypt where El-Mansoura is the capital of the Dakahlia Governorate. Established in 1219, El-Mansoura was so named after the Egyptians defeated Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade. The name in Arabic means "victorious". Sitting on the east bank of the Damietta branch of the Nile River in the region of the Delta, the city is 120 km northeast of Cairo in Lower Egypt. Home to the prestigious public Mansoura University famous for its School of Medicine, there are also several language schools if you wish to learn the local lingo. You won't find many tourists here.
The city is divided into 2 areas: Hai Gharbaya and Hai Sharqia. If you don't plan on walking around, then the best bet is to grab a taxi, but remember taximeters are not in use so remember to fix the price first. As food hygiene standards are not exactly wonderful throughout Egypt, ensure you have packed some form of medicine for when the Pharaohs' get their revenge and send you scuttling for the nearest convenience in agony of cramps. A mother's hint is not to wear any offending clothing (aka body baring) and public drunkenness is a big "no no".
You can visit "Dar Ebn Iokman", the house of Louis IX of France when he was captured in El-Mansoura for a bit of a history lesson, but especially to gawk at his "cell toilet" that is on display. Make sure you take a leisurely stroll along the Nile to the city of Talkha; it's not far so you won't wear your walking shoes out. The public garden of "Gezirat El-Ward" is where to have some chill out time. If you need to spend some money then head downtown to the long street of "El-Sikka El-Gedida" famous for its clothing and gold jewelry.
