About Ciudad Real
Home to one of the most popular festivals, La Pandorga (think farmers and harvests) that takes place in July each year when everyone dons their jeans, a white shirt and a traditional handkerchief, Ciudad Real sits in central Spain, south of Madrid. The one-time royal counterpart of Toledo, it is a gritty Spanish working town that is not on the tourist radar. In recent years it has become a long-distance commuter suburb of Madrid with a population of around the 75,000 mark. Coworking venues have opened their doors here in response to the need by the locals who really don't want to jump on a train to get to a tech hub.
Founded in the 13th Century, there are quite a few historical sights to meander around, such as the Gothic-style San Pedro Church with its Moorish decorations and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Prado with 13th Century features, a huge nave and a decorative Baroque altarpiece. Located in the middle of the city you will find the Plaza Mayor where you can sit and sip your espresso and for the museum buff there is Don Quixote's Museum and the Museo Elisa Cendreros.
Its no startup or tech hub, but the city does have a diverse community of techie souls. As with the rest of Spain it is quite acceptable these days to say that you are an entrepreneur or a remote worker, rather than a civil servant. Many innovative locals are choosing to stay at home where the vino flows, rather than to seek their fortune and glory amidst big cities of smog. Coworking venues are providing the space to get some work done and to mingle with likeminded souls in collaborative bliss, rather than taking the train every morning.
