Where the locals are called "Wulfrunians", Wolverhampton is a millennium city along with Brighton, Hove and Preston. A town with a lot of entrepreneurial spunk, it was the first town in Britain to have automated traffic lights in 1927. This was also the year when the Sunbeam motorcar (built in Wolverhampton) became the first vehicle to hit 200mph breaking the existing land speed record. During the late 19th Century, the area surrounding Wolverhampton became known as "the Black Country" due to heavy industrialization creating pollution (think black soot creating black soil).
