About Mohali

The center of the universe for outsourcing IT companies, the land of butter chicken, saag (leaf based dish), makki di roti (flat unleavened bread) and where you grab your Punjabi juttis (traditional shoes) to stroll through a local pind (village) where dining at a dhaba (roadside restaurant or curb de cuisine) is the done thing; yes it is definitely a different language in Mohali, India. A measure of liquor is called a "patiala peg" and wearing a turban is de rigueur. This is where your diet does not come into the equation because of the heaps of ghee you will find in your local food.

Mohali (Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar - SAS Nagar) is a city located about 255 km from New Delhi and a satellite city to the city of Chandigarh in Punjab, India. About 8,000 years ago it was home to the ancient Harappan primitive people, during the medieval times it was won over by the Sikhs and became part of the Sikh Empire. In the 1960s the area around Mohali was developed as an industrial estate, which then grew into a residential area. It was renamed Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar in 1975, but is still known as "Mohali", with the majority of the population being Sikh. Temperatures soar during summer into the high 30s, with winters topping out around the 7 to 15 °C mark.

You can grab a rickshaw and head off in search of historical sites such as the Gurudwara Amb Sahib or the Gurudwara Mata Sundri, both being Sikh shrines. Make a wish and get blessed at the shrine of Dera Bakarpur, or gaze at the incredible Fateh Buri (The Victory Tower), the tallest tower in the city of Mohali. The markets are a must, especially if you are chasing a colorful embroidered scarf or a turban. There are some stunning gardens to explore such as the Rose Garden or the Bougainvillea Garden. For total time out head to either Musical Fountain Park, Valley Park or Silvy Park to hang out with the locals or maybe indulge in a bit of leg shaking "bhangra", as if no one is watching you.
