The regional capital sitting near the Mura River, Murska Sobota is located in the northeast of Slovenia. Affectionately referred to as "Soboto" by the locals, its name is derived from the Hungarian word "szombat" which means "Saturday", due to the fact that the city always held a fair on every Saturday. It was occupied by Hungary during World War II with a brief period of being under Nazi Germany and later liberated by Soviet troops in 1945.
