About Maastricht
A university city on the southern tip of the Netherlands, the capital of Maastricht is the largest city in the Limburg province adjacent to Belgium's border. Once a Roman settlement, the city became a medieval religious center and during the 16th century, a garrison town. In the 19th century Maastricht became an early industrial city and today it's a thriving regional hub oozing culture. The birthplace of the "Euro", this city is littered with 1677 national heritage buildings, the 2nd highest number in the Netherlands. A tourist drawcard for not just history buffs, but for shopaholics and those looking for entertainment, Maastricht is awash in local plus international students. It's a member of the "Most Ancient European Towns Network" with its cobblestoned old town in stark contrast to its futuristic inspired "Bonnefanten Art Museum" perched on the banks of the Maas River. You may have to brush up on your Dutch or Limburgish language skills (although many do speak English) if you wish to chat to one of the 122,397 locals in a coworking space or when in a bar snacking on some "bitterballen" (think savory meat balls) with your beer.
The Netherlands has its' promising startup hub happening in Amsterdam, as it was named the best European Tech City to work in by a recent tech study. There are actually 578 international ICT companies with offices in Amsterdam and many of them are always on the lookout for talented people. Maastricht is following closely behind due to its plethora of universities spawning tech savvy souls. Markets vary from cryptocurrency to online food ordering services. The country is becoming a hotbed for scaleups and startups with many forward thinking and tech driven individuals creating dreams that are becoming reality.
The Netherlands offers support and resources for those wishing to work independently or to get a fledgling startup soaring. Coworking venues are one more step in the ecosystem that is creating space for out-of-the-box thinkers to get together in collaborative bliss in a city offering a low-cost of living and plenty of culture, even if they do call "French fries" by the name of "patat or frites".
