About Dolny Kubin
A town sitting on the Orava River in the north of Slovakia in the Zilina Region, Dolny Kubin is the historical capital of the Orava region. Snuggled in between mountains, it is a mere 45km from the Polish border and 270km from Bratislava. Its' history goes back to 1899 when the town was named "Alsókubin" with written evidence of it having people walking over its land from 1314. From animal husbandry to becoming a market town, it became the center of Slovak national life in the 19th Century. Today it has a population of about 19,948 inhabitants including its tech savvy youth that prefer to hang out in a coworking venue, rather than the local cafe to get their stuff done.
If you need to say a little prayer for some celestial help with your startup there is the Gothic St. Catherine church from the 14th Century to meander into or for the history buff there is the P.O. Hviezdoslav Museum to poke your nose into. If you want to believe in childhood fantasies of castles, there is the Orava Castle only a few kilometers out of the town. Dolny Kubin is definitely not a tech or startup hub, but it does have its fair share of innovative souls. Slovakia's startup scene is dominated by founders under the age of 35 with 85% having a university or college degree. Most bootstrap without an external investor and with the introduction of laws defining what a "startup is" in 2017, it has opened the door for many to get government help.
Coworking venues play an important role allowing inventive souls to mingle in one space where they can collaborate and learn from each other, even if it is a somewhat small town.
