About Kigali
With the horrendous years of bloodshed and genocide behind it, Kigli is the largest city in Rwanda wearing a new cloak as a friendly and safe city with absolutely no plastic bags or rubbish in sight. Over the years it has been home to the Tutsis, Twas and the Hutus. Located amidst lush valleys and green ridges, some report that the city is boring and merely a stopping over point getting from the gorilla domain of the Volcanoes National Park, the ancient Nyungwe Jungle or the Akagera Savannah. Indeed the layout of this city is one of wheel spokes, with all roads leading from a central spoke in the middle of the city to various destinations.
It is easy to walk around with quite an abundance of cafes, bars and restaurants to keep your hunger or thirst at bay. If you happen to be there on the last Saturday in each month you will get to witness "Umuganda", a community act where everyone does their bit to clean up the streets, do a bit of gardening and lend a neighborly hand to those that need it. This is where plastic bags are really banned and as a consequence Kigali would be the cleanest city in Rwanda.
There is the Ivuka Arts Center with somewhat quirky displays such as a giant heart made out of red condoms, you can take an eclectic walking tour with local women from the Muslim quarter and peer into a maze of the multicultural heart of the city, take in the panoramic view from the top of Mount Kigali, or hire a bike and go bush bashing along clay tracks. The best known attraction unfortunately is the Kigali Genocide Memorial perched amidst a stunning rose garden and flowing fountains, but there is also the State House Museum and the Natural History Museum if you find the Memorial too confronting.
