About Heredia
Costa Rico's eponymous City of Flowers has definitely retained some of its old-world Spanish colonial charm, with its low-rise, tiled roof adobe mansions and leafy squares. However, the presence of several large corporations and the national university have given it a cosmopolitan touch. Walking through its streets, you will find a number of charming cafes, bookstores, and bars that have mushroomed over the years to cater to the locals as well as passing visitors.
Spend some time exploring the city, with its beautiful heritage architecture, especially the majestic La Inmaculada Concepcion church, parts of which have been brought over all the way from Peru, and the historic El Fortin tower, a throwback to the city's colonial past. Heredia's outskirts are also a delight for the wandering visitor - the picturesque little towns and sprawling coffee plantations that surround the city are the perfect weekend getaway for those seeking an escape from urban living.
The start-up scene in Costa Rica is still in its nascent phase, providing plenty of opportunities for the resourceful entrepreneurs to find their niche. Several homegrown companies have found success, with the aid of local investors and micro-venture capitalists. A booming tourist industry also provides plenty of opportunities to capitalize upon.
