About Tournai

Tournai sits on the Scheldt River about 85 km west southwest of Brussells.  Together with the town of Tongeren, Tournai is the oldest city in Belgium and wears a rich historical and cultural mantel.  You can grab a train direct from Brussels to get to this small quaint town that was once English.  Originally established by the Romans as a stop over on the road from Cologne to France, Tournai in the Middle Ages was a major tapestry-weaving area where blue-grey limestone buildings line its cobblestoned streets.

If gazing reverently or just in awe at churches turns you on, The Cathedral of Our Lady of Tournai is the most spectacular church in the whole of Belgium.  The 5-towered Romanesque and early Gothic, Notre Dame Cathedral, is a treasure chest of silver and copper with works by Rubens on display.  The UNESCO listed Belfry is the oldest in Belgium with 257 steps to climb to get to the top.  There is a Museum of Fine Arts overflowing with sculptures and paintings from primitive to contemporary such as Van Gogh, Rubens and Monet.  For another art culture hit, head to The Castle of Beloeil where you will find over 20,000 books, paintings dating from the 15th to the 19th Centuries and a stunning French style garden.
