About Gent

Sitting in the northwest of Belgium, Gent (aka Ghent) is a port city that is located where the Scheldt and the Leie Rivers meet. A university town and cultural hub, Gent has plenty of tech savvy youth running amok in its streets or getting their stuff done in coworking venues. Gent was a prominent city-state during the Middle Ages, so there is plenty for the history geek to drool over by way of medieval architecture. There is the Gravensteen Castle that was built in the 12th Century and a plethora of museums to waltz around. Gent is the capital of the East Flanders province with 260,467 inhabitants. Home to the annual Ghent Festival when the town is invaded by about 1.5 million tourists, it's now also home to coworking venues where the intrepid locals can get busy doing some work or getting creative with a startup.

The town is absolutely stunning, as most of its medieval architecture is preserved, plus it has the largest car-free area in the whole of Belgium, so that its folk plus the tourists don't have to worry about getting run over by wayward drivers. Gent is like stepping into the pages of a history book where there are plenty of churches to say little prayers at and an old harbor that you can meander around taking in the salt air. Oozing culture, Gent is the city where you can stuff yourself silly on donut-shaped buns called "mastel", praline chocolates that are still handmade and dribble a classic Flemish meat stew down your chin. The city actually has the largest number of vegetarian restaurants in the world on a per capita basis, so if you like to live without meat on your plate you will be one happy soul.

Within its midst is the Ghent University plus a large number of research companies as well as numerous schools, hospitals and shopping streets to meander along when you want to trash your credit card. It's no tech hub per se, but it does have its fair share of creative and tech savvy souls. Belgium is home to a developing startup scene with its capital Brussels becoming a booming hub for entrepreneurs. Initiatives such as Health Tech, Fintech hackathons and Startupweekend are putting the country into the global scene. Now that coworking venues have opened up the city's intrepid and innovative souls have the perfect place to hang out together in collaborative bliss.
