About Frankston
Where the electric train terminates and often referred to as "the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula" (and the fairy penguin parade), Frankston is an outer-southeastern suburb of Melbourne in Victoria. Initially a fishing village of the township of Melbourne, it sits on the eastern shoreline of Port Phillip Bay. Frankston has always been the place to swan around on the beach from the mid-1880s and is still one of the most frequented beaches in Victoria. The locals are called "Frankstonians" (tongue in cheek on that one) and it has held one of the biggest sand sculpting exhibitions in the Southern Hemisphere. Annually numerous festivals play out on the Frankston's shoreline such as the Waterfront Festival, the Ventana Fiesta and in late November, the sky blooms with the Festival of Lights, whilst there is a sand sculpting festival running from December to April of each year.
Historically a haven for bohemian artists, Frankston has open green spaces to play in or run the dog, stunning award winning beaches to dive into, no car congestion or pollution and is blessed with plenty of funky cafes and restaurants to waltz into. There is the Frankston Arts Center or the McClelland Gallery & Sculpture Park to delve into for the arty types. The George Pentland Botanic Gardens is great to meander around for the green thumbs. This is where you can cycle most places or go skating in the Frankston Skate Park. There is a BMX Racing Track if you are into a bit of mild excitement or Barefoot Bowls when bowling a ball down a grassy patch is done with a drink in the other hand and thumping music in the background. For the nature lover there is the Langwarrin, the Paratea and The Pines Flore and Fauna Reserves to stroll through or you can grab a picnic of local goodies from the Seaford Farmers Market and take a picnic to the Frankston Reservoir.
