Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hey, My name is Kara-Jay Matthews from Bristol, UK. I live in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which I absolutely love. In my free time I am bit of a party animal. I enjoy going to music festivals, having dinner with friends and going on adventures! Doing things spur of the moment makes life so much more interesting.
What are you working on right now?
I own a dropshipping store called MoonSugar Clothing. We specialize in selling women’s alternative fashion, which is a really fun niche to work in. The brand has been running for around 8 months and me and my business partner, Richard, are extremely happy with the business growth. We have even started to receive some fan artwork in on Instagram. Also, my girl boss partner in crime Stephanie Simons and I are launching an events company this year. We have huge plans in the pipeline for 2018 and are co-organising the Nomad Summit this year with Johnny FD. The whole experience and process has been challenging but it has also been so much fun. Watch this space!!
What is your current desktop wallpaper? and why?
Currently, it’s Zebra print. I use the Google Live wallpaper app which changes every 24 hours. I currently have it set to a textures theme. It’s great!
Which book has shaped your life or changed the way you think the most?
If you haven’t already you need to read: “What ever you think, think the opposite” It basically looks at life the wrong way in a bid to explain the benefits of making wrong decisions.
What is one thing you do to get motivated?
As I start to drift off to sleep every night I always imagine what my ideal life would look like in the not so far future. If I go to sleep with positive thoughts I wake up with a good mindset. I am a strong believer in the law of attraction. My alarm label is also called “wake up and kick ass” – I do need to get better at the waking up part though. I am a serial snoozer haha.
What made you smile today?
Being asked if I would like to share my story with you coworker.com ….. no seriously 😀 I’m honored!
What is something you think everyone should try at least once in their life? Or Name one skill you think everyone should have or learn?
I think everyone needs to be able to budget. It sounds really basic but I know so many people that have debt and let it spiral out of control and they got stuck in this horrible loop and it’s so hard to get out of. If anyone has been in the situation they will understand how much of a strain it puts on your relationships and how stressful it can be.
What is one skill or hobby you’ve been meaning to learn but haven’t had time for?
I really really really want to be fluent in speaking another language. I have been taking Thai lessons here which are so much fun, but it’s incredibly hard. I have so much respect for anyone multilingual.
List 3 simple things in life that make you really happy:
1. The cold side of the pillow
2. The sound of running water (from the ocean or river)
3. Avocado Eggs Benedict
What is the best thing that you have done, just because you were told you can’t?
Sustain the Digital Nomad Lifestyle. When I announced I was going to Thailand nobody from home could get their heads around the fact I was not going on a massive holiday or that I was going to be a full-time traveler. I think most people thought I was pretty crazy or that I would end up coming home after 3 months broke. I actually thank people that thought this way because to me success is the biggest form of revenge and if someone tells me I cant do something it really drives me forward to prove them wrong.
What is your favorite coworking space and why?
At the moment I love Buristro Bar and Cafe It has a gorgeous pool that you can use, delicious food and great WiFi. If you’re in town, come down and hang out 🙂
If you had the opportunity to spend a week or month in another country to be your office of the week/month, where would you go?
Tokyo!!! I have been once briefly and have been dying to get back ever since. Its one of my favorite places in the world.
What is the biggest item on your bucket list at the moment?
Ican’tt really give that away just yet as it is to do with my new events company with Stephanie Simons 😀 sorry! I don’t want to jinx anything.
As a Digital Nomad/Entrepreneur. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you have and why?
Apart from the obvious laptop and charger i would have Something to play music from and music Never ending bottle of gin A friend to talk to on the island (I cant go a day without talking to someone)
What was your first job? Has it shaped where you are today?
My first job was at the age of 14 – walking dogs at the local kennel getting paid 50p per walk. I cant say it shaped me in anyway BUT…. I now would never leave a pet in the kennels if I went away.
Any advice for your previous boss?
Be a leader, not a manager.
What’s your favorite part about coworking?
I love how you can bounce ideas around with other people. I love socialising and hearing about others progress and goals. If I can help someone out I will too. I find it really motivational and its a great way to meet like minded people.
