About Worcester

With a brewery named "Wormtown", Worcester surely must be worth visiting. A major contributor to the Industrial Revolution because of the innovative industry and commercial sector, this is where the first American valentine cards were designed by a woman, Esther Howland. Worcester sits in the state of Massachusetts about 64 km west of Boston and known as the "Heart of the Commonwealth". Initially inhabited by the Pakachoag Indians, English settlers came in 1673 only to be killed (some did run off) when their homes were burned during the King Philip's War in 1675. The area was again settled in 1684 and given the name of the historic town in England. It was an important munitions depot during the revolutionary war and is now home to the oldest musical festival in the United States.

An historic city with many examples of Victorian-era mill architecture to gawk at, you can learn about the local history at the Worcester Historical Museum. The art lovers should go to the Iris and B Gerald Cantor Art Gallery to be found in the College of the Holy Cross, or the Worcester Art Museum that has art spanning 50 centuries from sculpture to photography to decorative arts. You can get up close to a Monet, a Gauguin and even a Goya; to make your heart beat a little faster. The EcoTarium is an indoor-outdoor science and nature museum, for the enquiring mind to be boggled.

When you want time out, then you should head to the lush Green Hill Park or Elm Park to recharge the batteries.
