About Frederick

Home to the indie-rock band, Silent Old Mountains, their movie video for the single "Dead All the Time" was filmed in historical downtown Frederick.  Known as the "clustered spires" because of its dramatic skyline of historic churches, Frederick is a city in Frederick County in the State of Maryland.  Located on what was once the north south Indian trail, the east-west routes to Chesapeake Bay and across the Appalachian Mountains to the Ohio River, it is the gateway to western Maryland.  Home to the Frederick Municipal Airport and America's largest employer, the US Army's Fort Detrick bioscience/communications research installation, it is mostly comprised of 19th and 20th Century row housing with an older part that is dense overflowing with sidewalks and streets just made for walking.

Make sure you check out the Community Bridge where you will find a huge mural painted on the stonework and is often referred to as the "mural bridge".  Frederick is awash in art galleries and even the streets are adorned with arty inspirations such as "The Dreaming", a large-scale glass project in the theater district of the old town. You can always see an opera or take in some classical ballet and a musical performance at the amphitheater in Baker Park.  Tour the Monacacy National Battlefield if you are into confederate battlefields or take a ninja course at the adventure park Zavazone, if that is more your way of partaking in a battle.  For the quirky ones, there is a National Museum of Civil War Medicine that tells the medical story of the American Civil War.

There are over 200 antique shops to work your way through, whilst your other half if you have one, goes to a baseball game. The Cunningham Falls State Park has a stunning 78-foot waterfall to run under with a huge lake, campsites and hiking trails for the explorer.  If you like your vino, then go on a local winery crawl, as there are 6 within easy reach to savor some grapes at.
