About La Porte

The current mayor of La Porte, Blair Milo, elected in 2011 at the age of 28 is the youngest mayor in the whole of the city's history. The town sits in northwest Indiana and was settled in 1832. La Porte likes its annual festivals: a county fair, a sunflower festival, a "Cruise Night" when you will see over 400 antique vehicles moseying around downtown historic La Porte, the Maple City Grand Prix in May when F1 and F-Light boats vie for first place to the cheering of the crowds lining Stone Lake Beach and an annual bike-walking-running event, "Tour de La Porte" in August.

For the history buffs and museum lovers, there is the La Porte County Historical Society Museum to get some dust up your nose or you can get lost in one of the 20 orchards, farms and gardens in the area just smelling the fresh air. If manicured gardens aren't your thing then head to the wetlands or one of the scenic trails for a wilder experience of the natural kind. Maybe the complete wild isn't what you want, so go to one of the city parks that are dotted around the town. There is Allesee Park or Ben Rees Park to have a game of basketball, indulge in a game of tennis at the Bill Reed Tennis Complex or stand in the shade of stunning white oaks in the grove of Charles W Lindewald Park. You will find Clear Lake at the Fox Memorial Park that is perfect for a picnic spread in what is considered to be La Porte's finest park. You can splash around in the water at Stone Lake Beach, Pine Lake Beach or Ski-Beach that is also a boaties' paradise as the channel connects Pine Lake to Stone Lake. There are weekly Saturday farmers' markets to explore and golf balls to chase at one of the 3 golf courses in town.
