About Santa Cruz

Located in California, Santa Cruz sits on the northern edge of Monterey Bay.  Home to the University of California, the area is has an amazing coastline, stunning redwood forests, a bohemian bent and an historical beachfront amusement park in operation since 1915, The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.  Originally a town of lumber, gunpowder, lime and agriculture, Santa Cruz was a Spanish settlement in 1791.

A surf city, legend has it that 3 Hawaiian princes surfed the mouth of the San Lorenzo River on locally made surfboards in 1885.  The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the oldest amusement park and has a still-running wooden Giant Dipper roller coaster from 1924 and a 1911 Carousel.  The movie "The Lost Boys" was filmed in Santa Cruz and Quentin Tarantino has had a love affair with Santa Cruz as his "Pulp Fiction" movie feature the character of John Travolta wearing a Santa Cruz t-shirt with an iconic banana slug mascot. In his film "Reservoir Dogs", there are numerous references to the city of Santa Cruz.

In Santa Cruz you can go whale watching in Monterey Bay, surf until your heart's content as it is home to the O'Neill Cold Water Classic surfing contest, meander around the Big Basin Redwoods State Park where you can splash in a waterfall, take deep breathes of fresh air and hopefully run into the odd animal or two of the friendly variety.  Grab some scenic shots on your camera walking along the West Cliff Drive, or be a devil and ride a train at the Roaring Camp Railroads.

Independent and proud, the Santa Cruz locals are very liberal thinking, where you will find a predominantly surfing atmosphere hand-in-hand with beachside fun.
