About Palo Alto

The birthplace of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is the only place with a garage on the National Register of Historic Places.  "HP Garage" is the icon of innovation and entrepreneurism as Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard bought the garage in 1938 for a workspace to start their own company.  The garage was soon outgrown and they moved on to bigger things - the rest is history. Palo Alto today is internationally recognized as a leader in the development of cutting-edge technology. The town is cocooned in a 50 km dark fiber ring for ultra-fast Internet.

Named after a coastal redwood tree where the Spanish first settled along San Francisquito Creek, the town is over 100 years old.  A vibrant downtown city area blends the bustling business district with a residential charm of the old and the new. Palo Alto is about 56 km from San Francisco in the San Francisco Metropolitan Bay Area and Silicon Valley.  The locals are not your average "Joe Blow", as they are highly educated, culturally sophisticated and very politically aware.

You can grab a bike and ride around as there are numerous bike pathways or jump on a shuttle of the internal shuttle service to get to wherever you want to go.  There are heaps of open green spaces with approximately 34 parklands to jog, walk or run around if you want a bit of exercise rather than just chilling out time. Computer geeks will love exploring the Computer History Museum, the Stanford Linear Accelerator, the Stanford Research Park or a trip around the Stanford University campus where you get to see the Hoover Tower, the Cantor Arts Center or the Rodin Sculpture Garden.  If you are into things that grow in the ground, head to the either the Sunset Magazine Gardens in Menlo Park or the Gamble Garden to admire some flora and fauna. For the art lovers, the Palo Alto Art Center showcases local art works and for those that love to shop, the Allied Arts Guild has an array of gardens, shops and artists' studios to explore.
