About Port Louis
The capital city of Mauritius, Port Louis is the country's economic, cultural and political hub for the country with a population of about 149,194. With a diverse and vibrant culture, Port Louis is where you will find the nation's main harbor and the only official port of entry and exit for sea vessels in Mauritius. It's here that ships must be cleared before visiting any other anchorage in the island nation. A magnet for creatives of all types from poets to painters, writers to sculptors and throw in the odd tech whisperer or innovative soul. Now coworking venues have opened their doors to cater to those in search of somewhere to get some work done.
Awash in French colonial architecture and home to the 19th Century Champ de Mars horseracing track, Port Louis has a chaotic and colorful huge central market where you can pick up some local produce or buy that must have handicraft item. Museum buffs can meander around the Blue Penny Museum and find out about the island's colonial and maritime history, whilst the shopaholic can haunt the Caudan Waterfront and trash a credit card. This is a small city with big appeal where you can stuff yourself silly on dumplings, buy knock-off sunglasses or get your trousers shortened if you were blessed with shorter than average legs.
Port Louis may not be a tech hub, but it is certainly a town that lures and unleashes creative ideas and with the opening of coworking spaces, there is somewhere to mingle with likeminded souls and to lament the extinction of the dodo bird.
