About Cheboksary

The capital city and a port on the Volga River, Cheboksary is a popular stop on the itinerary of many boat tours that ply the river.

This is the town to pull out the wallet and buy a wooden beer mug in, as apart from exquisite embroidered textile items, beer is the main focus. In Cheboksary you will find the only Beer Museum in the whole of Russia sitting at the end of Karl Marx Street, hidden away in a courtyard. You will learn about the history of the local Chuvashian brew and you can satisfy your thirsty curiosity at the bar on the top floor. The area has been the center for growing hops and beer brewing for hundreds of years. There are 2 beer manufacturers in town, "Buket Chuvashii" and "Yantar".

From Cheboksary you can grab a boat from the little harbor and head to the quaint village of Jurino, where you will find a gorgeous church and a small palace to explore. In the city itself you should check out the Saint-Trinity Monastery built in 1566 and the Vvedensky Cathedral from 1657.
For those into a bit of culture, like most Russian cities, you will find an Opera-Ballet Theater, a Philharmonic Orchestra and quite a few smaller theaters with productions both in Russian and Chuvash languages. Sorry, but there are none in English. The locals all gather in the heart of the city to socialize in the cafes or promenade along the boardwalk beside the beaches of the Volga River, where some game souls actually swim in the summer.
