About Essen

Located in western Germany, Essen is the 4th largest city of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia with a population of around the 589,000 mark. The city is home to several of the region's authorities and to 8 of the 100 largest German Corporations in relation to turnover, such as 3 DAX corporations. This puts the city 2nd to Munich and on a par with Frankfurt in the number of corporate headquarters that call it home.

Germany's startup scene is thriving with opportunities given to creative souls to pitch their ventures to investors at "Startup Germany" that went on tour at the instigation of the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad. The startup scene is a bit of a mixed bag with almost 30% of startup staff not being German. There are a few hurdles to overcome such as red tape hassles, language barriers and the fact that most founders wish to hire skilled foreign workers. Eight out of ten German startups want to go international, but legal systems and regulations may be inhibitors in this regard.
Despite these niggles, coworking spaces are overflowing with creatives in collaborative mode whilst mingling with a vibrant community.

When you aren't busy creating in your coworking space there are quite a few museums to poke your nose into, a heritage trail through the former colliery chronicles of the coal mining and steel production of the city, plus a contemporary museum in an old boiler house worth investigating.
