About Monterrey

The unique city of Monterrey is very different from its rival Mexico City. The home of Carta Blanca beer, the Tec de Monterrey University, one of the world's largest cement companies "Cemex" and the Sultanes baseball club, it is where the locals are referred to as "Regios". Mexico's business and industrial hub, the desert city Monterrey is often referred to as the "Sultan of the North"

Fringed by mountains and in the shadow of the Palacio del Obispado - a Baroque palace and regional museum - Monterrey is known for its downtown Macroplaza. This vast green area of connected squares is home to the brilliant Museo de Arte Contemporaneo and the Faro de Comercio Tower that beams a green laser into the sky.

There is a bubbling entrepreneurial spirit in this economic powerhouse dominated by a bustling university scene, a throbbing nightlife and a rich cultural aura. For the outdoor lover there are plenty of chances for exploring the jagged mountains in the surrounding area and for the shopaholic there is a plethora of gargantuan air-conditioned shopping malls to play in. You can meander around the Barrio Antiguo satisfying any thirst or hunger pangs amidst the many cafes, bars and restaurants, or check out the historical center where most of the cultural attractions are located.

You won't be able to escape the sounds of Norteno music (traditional Mexican music related to corridos and the polka) blaring out into the streets everywhere and you had better like beef, as this is definitely a carnivore city.

If you want to rub shoulders with the Regios (the locals), head to South Padre Island for a bit of beach and sun worshipping time.
