About Wilmington

The port city of Wilmington in New Hanover County sits on Cape Fear River. Yes we all know the 1991 movie (a remake of an earlier version) with Robert De Niro starring in it, "Cape Fear" that was a bit on the scary side.

A coastal town, it has been named as the Best American Riverfront and the Trust for Historic Preservation has put it in the lists of a "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" to visit. Only minutes from beaches, there are 4 communities: Fort Fisher, Wrightsville Beach, Kure Beach and Carolina Beach. With some of the best surfing to be found on the East Coast, it is home to the largest domestic television and movie studio in the United States, EUE Screen Gems Studios - think Fox's "Sleepy Hollow" and "One Tree Hill". Opened in 1984 it has the largest special-effects water tank in North America.

Designated a "Coast Guard City" it is the homeport for the USCGC Diligence, a United States Coast Guard medium endurance cutter.

You can play sailors and tour the World War II battleship USS North Carolina, stalk around the Cape Fear Museum and promenade along the historic one mile long Riverwalk. Wrightville Beach is where you want to be to catch some of the best waves during August to October, as it has been named one of the top 20 surf towns by National Geographic. Even paddle boarding here is above your average. Awash in a laid-back beach vibe, there is always the treacherous waters of Cape Fear River to add some excitement for the extreme sport junkies. The lighthouse is the oldest in North Carolina and was built to warn sailors of the sandbars.

You can take a walk through Memorial Park or visit the Airlie Gardens flush with azaleas and the signature Airlie Oak that is over 400 years old. The historic District is full of restaurants serving up the freshest seafood and there are numerous shops from eclectic boutiques to antiques, to ruin your credit card. One of North Carolina's brilliant historic homes, Bellamy Mansion is open to walk through, as is Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens, 1 of only 3 houses that have survived since the colonial era. It is possible to take in some history at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site where during the Civil War blockade-runners brought in supplies for the Confederate troops. Or if it appeals, you can play with snakes and crocodiles at the Cape Fear Serpentarium.
