About Cherkasy

You won't need a lot of time to do over this city that has been destroyed and resurrected several times throughout its history. The only remnants of the 19th Century are a few buildings and the old part of the city has a system of streets and squares that you can meander, in an attempt to try and capture in your mind the 19th Century Ukraine atmosphere. Sitting in the central area of Ukraine, it is the administrative center of the Cherkasky Raion District. Originally a Cossack domain, the local citizens wrecked havoc during Cossack and peasant rebellions, throughout its history. Sitting on the right bank of the Dnieper River at the Kremenchuk Reservoir, it is 200 km south from Kiev.

The sum total of the city can be said to be "a railway station, a river port and an airport". Not exactly a destination to run to with great excitement. Nonetheless there is a stunning openwork steel water tower, one of the first hyperbolic constructions in the world that you can have a gawk at. The most luxurious mansion of pre-revolutionary times is the Scherbina House built in 1892 that doubled as the city's registry office. It wouldn't be a Russian city without having a puppet theater and a school of music, so there is no disappointment on this front. You can take your pick of museums to explore such as the Local History Museum for some local historical gossip and artifacts, whilst The Museum of Art showcases private collections of Count Bobrinsky, and Princes Lopukhins and Belokopytovy. There are plenty of monuments to its glorious past such as "Castle Hill" on the site of an ancient Russian fort and a quirky dumpling inspired monument of a Cossack eating dumplings. If you want to be gob-smacked, head to the St Michael's Cathedral, the largest church in the Ukraine that can seat up to 12 thousand people at any one time. Just hope your prayers can be heard amidst the crowd's mumblings.
