About Krasnodar

Sitting on the Kuban River about 148 km from the Black Sea Port of Novorossiysk, Krasnodar may not really rock your boat. The administrative center of the Krasnodar Krai region of Russia, it was founded in 1794 by the Black Sea Cossack settlers under Catherine the Great to guard the Russian Empire's southern border. Ethnically it is a bit of a mixture of Armenians, Ossetians (aka an Iranian ethnic group) and Russian Jews. Considered to be one of the most important historical and cultural cities of Southern Russia, obviously based on the fact that there are 10 museums.

Krasnodar has a plethora of transport options to get around on, from trolleybuses, trams, buses and taxis to taking a boat across the Kuban River, but don't expect any of them to stick to a time-table and expect to be crushed by a mass of humanity during peak times. The main street of the city is Krasnaya Street and this is where you will find most of the interesting spots. During the evenings part of the street is closed to traffic, so you can have no fear of being run over. You will not be short of places to choose from if you want to watch a performance of some sort, as there are 12 theaters in town from a Puppet Theater to the regional Philharmonic Hall. There are also 11 movie theaters to get out of the cold, with the "Aurora" movie theater being one of the oldest preserved theaters in the city. As said there are 10 museums to meander around such as the Krasnodar Regional Fine Arts Museum and the Krasnodar Regional Exhibit Hall. You can find a park to contemplate your navel in, a zoo to chat to the animals (they don't mind if you speak English to them) and for the summer months you have the choice of 2 water parks to splash about in.

One thing you must make sure that you take time out for is a walk around Vostochniy Rinok (aka bazaar), where you can haggle over the price of items as much as you want.
