About Hamilton

"The Tron" as the locals refer to Hamilton, is for some a boring hometown, but for others "It isn't so bad" - hedged by - "so long as you have protection with you if you go clubbing", according to some unsavory rumors. That aside, Hamilton is the second fastest growing city in New Zealand so there are always going to be a few hiccups to say the least. Awash in PhD-qualified scientists, as there are over 1,000 of them living and working there, it is surrounded by 7 peat bogs sitting on the north island in the Waikato region. Hamilton experiences some of the hottest summers in New Zealand. A modern city astride the Waikato River that is the longest river in New Zealand, this is where you will find New Zealand's hottest attraction "Hobbiton" the location where The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was filmed.

Go to the weekend markets to get a real taste of the cultural diversity, the fresh produce available or hand made items that will have you grabbing for your wallets. You should take the time to visit the local galleries such as Art Post, a cute French cafe and some eclectic boutique shops in Casabella Lane, if the generic big stores do nothing for you. The Hamilton Gardens, a sprawling public park, give you an experience of different themed-gardens ranging from Italian Renaissance to traditional Maori styles in a chilled out ambience. Victoria Street is lined with dynamic buzzing restaurants and bars to quell any hunger pangs or impulses for a cocktail or two. Go to the horse races at Te Rapa Racecourse or the Skycity Casino if you are feeling lucky. Take time out to casually stroll or ride a bike along the riverbank rubbing shoulders with the locals. A must do is to take in a rugby match and experience the "haka" in real life.

If you want a real New Zealand experience, go to the largest agricultural trade show in the southern hemisphere, The New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays, where you can actually see the mayhem of tractor racing amongst other quirky events.
