About Hobart

Smothered in national parks - 18 to be exact or 1.38 million acres - and with over 2000 km of walking tracks, Tasmania is dressed in natural beauty. Hobart is the capital of this island within the Australian sovereignty.  The city sits on the Derwent River with the second deepest natural harbor in the world.  It is a buzzy cosmopolitan port city with plenty of things to do.

Historically the island was established to banish penal convicts from the shores of Australia and evidence of its intriguing history can still be seen, especially at Port Arthur.  Tasmania is one of the world's most beautiful destinations as it is smothered in lush vegetation, blessed with a long coastline and has plenty of diverse wildlife. So I guess you could say, the convicts were sent on a holiday albeit one with harsh restrictions and the odd flogging or two.

Sitting beneath Mount Wellington, Hobart has the best Saturday markets happening in Salamanca Place, a mass of restaurants and cafes and several dynamic art galleries to visit.  There is the Hobart Penitentiary Chapel for the history buffs or for those into the gulping of a frothy beer or two, the Cascade Brewery, Australia's oldest that was founded in 1824. If you happen to be a greenie and into a bit of flora and fauna sights then visit the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.  For a relaxing escape minutes outside of the city, head to Sandy Bay that is lined with quaint cafes, historical houses and gorgeous beaches to play on.
