Throughout my life, I have always been a bit of a nerd, with my two great passions being my love of video games and my desire to travel and see the world.

To explore and be the hero in my very own epic adventure.

Unfortunately however travel always tended to take a back seat in my life. With pressures of society to get an education, get a car, get a house, advance your career, etc. The list goes on and on, and so the cogs kept turning. By 2010 at the age of 25 although I was living my childhood dream of working in the video games industry and had shipped over ten titles. I still had never been overseas or even gotten a passport for that matter.  I was left unfilled; there had to be more to life.

But that was when everything changed.

With the global financial crisis happening in 2010, the Australian Games Industry was crumbling, resulting in me being made redundant and out of a job.

With no work in Australia, I decided it was time to start taking life into my own hands. After hearing about many excellent employment opportunities in Montreal Canada. My partner and I sold everything we owned, got our first passports and working holiday visas for Canada. Within six weeks, we had downsized our lives to just a couple of suitcases and were off on a one-way ticket from Brisbane Australia to Montreal for a new life in Canada.

After a couple of years working crazy hours in Canada (very common in the video games industry). I went through the toughest couple of month’s of my life. I split up with my partner of 8 years and got made redundant from my job for a second time.

Inspired by my taste of travel and living overseas, I decided it was time to stop living my life on auto-pilot and finally become the hero in my own epic adventure. Instead of spending my day’s playing video games and wishing my life was something else.

So in Late 2012 I sold everything I owned for the second time and booked a one-way ticket to Mexico. I traveled Latin America for five months with a backpack on my back. This is when I also created my travel blog Nerd Travels as a way to help document my travels and inspire others take a leap of faith and see the world.

Hell, if a shy video game nerd who didn’t even get a passport until he was 25 can travel the world then so can you.

If I’ve learned anything from the past few five years of travel, it’s that life really can be anything you want it to.

Sometimes it just takes a little bit of a push or a leap of faith to get you there.
