About Shinjuku-ku
Known as Tokyo's second heart, Shinjuku-ku is not a city but a "special ward" and is the major administrative and commercial center with the busiest railway station in the world, Shinjuku Station. Over 3.8 million passengers flow through the station daily, so that is some people scrum you will have to negotiate. In the station itself you will find a giant multi-level warren of department stores, commercial buildings, railway facilities, underground shopping malls and restaurants sprawling out into the surrounding area. If you suffer from agoraphobia, it may be best if you steer clear.
If you can get outside the station, the north holds Takadanobaba where students from Waseda University ply the streets, whilst the residential areas of Yotsuga and Ichigaya are in the east, where you will also find quaint restaurants and drinking venues. The last "hanamachi" (geisha district) named Kagurazaka is home to numerous Italian and authentic French restaurants. This area is alive with over 30,000 foreign residents living and working in its enclave. You will see the skyscraper district on the west side of the city with the mammoth Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices (an Orwellian architectural masterpiece by Kenzo Tange) and the curved from of the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower. Make sure you head to the twin observatories on the 45th floor to get one of the best views ever over Tokyo's dynamic sprawl.
For the boys' only tour, the red light district is Kabukicho and the gay nightlife pulsating heart is at Shinjuku ni-chome. If it all gets too much to handle, go to the Shinijuku Gyoen National Garden to sniff the cherry blossoms in the spring or to chill out in the Taiwanese teahouse. You might be lucky and come across a flea market to scavenge around at the weekend near the Hanazono Shrine, or if you simply want to watch the never-ending parade of trains, the Southern Terrace exit of the station will give you a great train spotting position on a bridge.
